Telecom equipment maker Ericsson said on Tuesday it saw its third-quarter earnings coming in below market expectations as well as its own forecasts due to “an unexpected shift in the business mix”.

Ericsson, the world’s biggest mobile network maker, said its preliminary operating earnings fell to 5.6 billion Swedish crowns ($876 million) from a year-ago 8.8 billion to come in below the 8.9 billion seen in a Reuters poll of 33 analysts.

“The unexpected development in the quarter is mainly due to a shortfall in sales in mobile network upgrades and expansions which resulted in an unfavorable business mix that also negatively affected group margins,” the firm said in a statement.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on Monday that it had entered into $1 million dollar, five-year R&D collaboration with Stanford University in the US for research in the critical area of data privacy.

TCS scientists from the Tata Research Development and Design Centre in Pune and the computer science department at Stanford University will work on joint projects in the areas of security and data privacy through this collaboration.

“Data privacy is at the centrestage of global organisations. The available data privacy tools and technologies being developed worldwide are at a very early stage of development. We have been approached by many banks and financial institutions looking to secure communication and mask critical data. This collaboration brings the best minds from the academia and industry together. Universities need large amounts of data for testing new ideas and that is something which TCS intends providing through such collaborations,” said Mr S. Ramadorai, chief executive officer and managing director, TCS. Stanford is one of the leading US universities working in the area of data privacy.

Indian manufacturing companies, often overlooked as a competitive force in the global manufacturing arena, are enjoying gross profits and sales growth rates nearly twice that of global manufacturers, according to the preliminary findings of a Global Benchmark Study by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, a consulting firm.

Preliminary findings from Deloitte’s Global Bench-mark Study in India indicate that local manufacturers are enjoying average sales growth of 15 percent, as compared to global peers at seven and delivering gross profits averaging 16 percent, as compared with an eight per cent global average.

“Deloitte’s preliminary benchmark findings reveals that industry capabilities in areas such as product innovation, manufacturing quality, and process innovation are driving the performance of Indian manufacturing companies,” says Kumar Kandaswami, Manufacturing Industry Leader, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India.

“To effectively compete in the global market over the long term. Indian manufacturers must invest and build scale in crucial areas of production, distribution, and marketing/sales,” add Mr. Kandaswami. “These are key capabilities needed to efficiently access nationwide and global markets.” Deloitte has outlined seven critical areas for CEOs to address in order to improve the performance and competitiveness of their business. These include the need to improve visibility into key strategic and operational performance metrics, increasing colllaboration, with customers and suppliers, especially in the area of product innovation.
