Made in India PC for just about $100

While global computing giants like IBM and AMD are yet to give shape to their ambitious plans for a computer that costs 100 dollars or less, an Indian company has already set its eyes on 10 million potential customers with its up-and-running PC priced at Rs 4,500 only.

The machine, launched by Chennai-based Novatium Solutions in 2004, costs a little over 100 dollars as of today in the US currency, thanks to the depreciation in the greenback, but it was priced at less than 100 dollars till a few months back.

Novatium is targeting 10 million users in the next five years for this innovative product, company CEO Alok Singh said from Chennai.

The company has already started a successful commercial pilot for its NetPC computer in Chennai, he said.

Right to identity, the literary way

After living aloof from society for ages, the Denotified Nomadic Tribes (DNT) are gradually getting vocal about their rights. And what better than their language could be their stand to establish the identity of their own in country’s mainstream.

With this thought in mind, around 200 tribal writers from Agartala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Maharashtra would flock at Dandi to participate in a conference organised by Vadodara-based NGO Bhasha Research Trust on Monday.

The meet is a part of the movement initiated by DNTs seeking the right to identity, to have ration cards and to do away with their stigma of being criminals.

By penning down these issues in their write-ups, the tribal writers have come up with publication of their language.

The conference will see a number of such publication on which a line of discussion will be drawn for the conference.

Talking to Express Newsline, noted tribal activists and writer Kanji Patel, who hails from Lunavada taluka of Panchmahals and will be the part of the event, said, “What we are not expose to is the hidden talent of tribals. There will be collections of works (plays, songs and languages) by tribal artist,’’ said Patel.

The present conference is an attempt to bring out obscure languages, still alive in the tribal, so that their works can be published, he added.

Bhasha Research Trust, which had organised a tribal conference at Ranchi last year, has also planned an international conference for tribal writers at Delhi next year, said Sonal Bakshi, the Trust co-ordinator.

Divulging further information about the international conference, she said that tribals from from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Africa would take part in the meet.

Finally, test flight touches down in Surat

After the inaugural flight of A-319 jet from Surat to Delhi, which was supposed to be on May 1, was grounded, the airbus of the Indian touched down at the Surat airport at 11 am on Sunday, making it the first commercial passenger aircraft to land in Surat.

This test flight, which had no passengers on board but Airports Authority of India officials and a flight crew, primarily aimed at testing radar and landing systems at airport. As reported earlier, the inaugural flight of jet from Surat was grounded due to operational and flight safety issues at airport as cited by Director General of Civil Aviation authorities. The ongoing construction activity on runway and at the passenger terminal was temporarily suspended for facilitating landing and take off. Airport Authority officials from Delhi took rounds of control tower and passenger terminal at Surat airport before re-embarking on the flight at 1.30 pm.

The airplane flying overhead citizens also excited some curious onlookers on the road to gaze at the sky. “We did some technical checking and familiarisation of the flight route to the pilots. They were briefed on take off and landing procedures to be followed. The test flight is a normal procedure followed in the course of action for starting any new airport and checking its equipments,’’ said Surat airport in-charge Ranvirsingh Rana.

Normal construction work and work on the runway lights will resume from Monday after the Director General of Civil Aviation instructed that the airport needs to be completed by May 6.
