Kerala to float company for IT infrastructure

With Kerala fast emerging as a major IT destination, the state government has decided to set up a joint venture IT infrastructure development company to provide state-of-the-art facilities on demand to firms setting up units in state.

The government would have 51 per cent share in the company and the rest of the holding would be mobilised from private sector, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

An initial allocation of Rs 50 crore would be made for the venture in the 2008-09 state budget.

Several IT majors were showing interest in starting facilities in the state considering its inherent advantages like better connectivity and availability of professionals and skilled workers. The presence of an agency that could create and provide infrastructure including land, buildings and other facilities would be helpful to the IT investors, he said.

The cabinet also decided to initiate steps for acquisition of land for the Kochi metro rail. The negotiations on the project with the Delhi Metro Corporation were on.

"Let us first have the land. The negotiations could continue side by side. A notification for acquisition of the land would be issued shortly," Achuthanandan said when asked about the progress of talks with the Delhi Metro Corporation.
