JV with Wal-Mart to benefit common man: Mittal

Seeking to put to rest concerns about impact of multinationals on livelihood security of local retail operators, Bharti Group Chairman Sunil Mittal said his group's tie-up with Wal-Mart would ‘reverse’ this perception.

"The joint venture will work in the interest of common man. For example, a pullover will be available for about Rs 40 against the average price of Rs 400 per piece," he said.

"We are following the policy and all the norms on joint venture with Wal-Mart," Mittal said in the context of the political debate over Foreign Direct Investment in retail and Congress president Sonia Gandhi's letter to the government, advising caution on opening up the sector for FDI.

According to reports, the Congress president had written to the Prime Minister asking the government to first study the impact of transnational super markets on livelihood security of those engaged in small scale operations, before taking further decisions on FDI in retail.

Mittal said the JV, forged last year, would unveil its retail plans in ten days.

Asked about reports whether Wal-Mart's CEO would visit India, he said a top-level team of the US retail giant's management would be in India from February 22-24, but did not elaborate.

Yahoo makes e-mail chatty

Yahoo has blended its free e-mail and instant messaging (IM) services making it simple for users to ‘chat’ online from any computer connected to the Internet.

"We are bringing the fun of instant messaging into the e-mail experience," Yahoo vice president John Kremer said.

"It's about bringing to the masses choices in how they communicate."

The enhanced web-mail service can be accessed via the Internet and skips the need to download IM client software onto computers, according to Yahoo.

"It is about bringing to the masses choices in how they communicate," Kremer said.

"We are giving you more ways to connect with communities, friends, and peers and will continue to add more social networking features into Yahoo mail."

People using Yahoo e-mail can see whether contacts listed in their address books are online and initiate IM chats with them, a demonstration showed.

Users can switch back-and-forth between e-mail and IM, taking transcripts of exchanges with them.

The move was intended to make IM more enticing and be in tune with online socialising preferences of teenagers and pre-teens, according to Yahoo.

"Tweens and teens are changing the way we use the web," Kremer said. "There is a large intersection between Yahoo mail users and users of social networking sites like MySpace and YouTube."
