PC sales scale 4m mark in 2005


India’s personal computer shipments crossed 4 million unit landmark to close the year 2005 at a record 4.3 million units with HP leading the overall market with 17 per cent share and in the important desktop segment, HCL Infosystems was the was the leading domestic vendor .
Indian client PC market (Notebook+desktop PCs) witnessed a 26 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth in unit shipments in 2005 over 2004, according to sectoral tracking firm IDC.

In the overall client PC market, MNC vendor HP retained the top slot with a market share of 17 per cent, followed by HCL at 13 per cent, and Lenovo at 7 per cent in terms of unit shipments. In terms of total desktop shipments, HCL led the market, while in terms of total notebook PC shipments, HP was the top vendor. There was a 148 per cent (Y-o-Y) jump in Notebook PC shipments. The commercial desktops category witnessed a 14 per cent (Y-o-Y) growth with HCL maintaining the top rank in terms of unit shipments, followed by HP and Lenovo


Kalam: IT will grow to $200bn


The Indian IT and ITeS industry should aim to grow to $200 billion by 2010, instead of the $60 billion growth projected by the National Association of Software and Service Companies, said President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the Nasscom 2006 summit in Mumbai on Friday.

The President pointed out areas where the Indian IT sector could contribute, such as, convergence of technologies, food preservation, water treatment, disease diagnosis and screening including automobile hardware-software integration.

He also suggested that Nasscom convert the addressable market to actual market and promote secondary cities for BPOs and ITes services including establishing JVs between Philippines, Korea, Singapore and other East Asian countries.

On a recent visit to Samsung’s office in Korea, the President had challenged the company to develop a cost-effective Tablet PC for 300 million school students costing around $100 to 150. “Now, I’m telling the same to you. Indian IT captains should look at B2B and B2C with partnering countries and should now, look East,” he said.
