Just a few days after professional researchers studying mobile viruses received information about the a virus called Crossover, that jumps between computers and mobile devices, on Tuesday, security experts issued a public warning on a new wild Trojan horse capable of infecting nearly any cellphone in the world. What is even more alarming is that the Trojan program sends SMS messages at premium rates instead of retrieving wireless application protocol pages, thus costing the user more per download said experts.
J2ME/RedBrowser.a arrives in a JAR file named "redbrowser.jar." The Java Archive or JAR, file format enables users to bundle multiple files into a single archive file and contains the class files and auxiliary resources associated with applets and applications. Many cellphones use Java for games, and some other programs, hence all Java phones are at risk.
The risk assessment of this threat has been updated to low-profiled as it represents a new proof of concept (POC) for premium-rate SMS fraud on a variety of mobile platforms. Experts have called this new threat a clear indicator that malicious code writers are expanding into mobile territory.
"Carefully read following description of RedBrowser program. This programme allows viewing WAP pages without GPRS connection," is the message that is displayed on infected phones upon startup and so far this Trojan runs on the Nokia 6681, Sony-Ericsson W800i and Blackberry 8700c phones. xperts have warned that mobile threats will spread faster as faster download speeds are a common feature among next generation wireless networks. The Trojan malware requires users to intentionally install it upon their cell phone.
