Annual inflation rises to 6.12 per cent


The wholesale price index rose 6.12 per cent in the 12 months to January 6, higher than the previous week's annual rise of 5.58 per cent due to higher food and energy prices, data showed on Friday.


The figure was marginally higher than a forecast of 6.11 per cent in a Reuters poll of analysts and the highest in two years.

The annual inflation rate was 3.86 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The wholesale price index is more closely watched than the consumer price index, which is published monthly, because it has a higher number of products in its basket and is published weekly

Virgin Mobile eyes India tie-up with Tata


British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Mobile is readying to enter the Indian market in a venture with Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd., the Times reported on Wednesday.


Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata was understood to be in talks with Virgin about the British mobile firm becoming an exclusive franchisee of his conglomerate's telecoms arm, the newspaper said without citing sources.

The tie-up could be operating as early as April, it added,

Pantaloon Retail in pact with US-based Staples


With a view to become a leading office products provider, Pantaloon Retail India has entered into a joint venture with US-based Staples Inc and its new business unit, Future Office.


The agreement establishes a platform for Staples to enter the USD 10 billion office products market in India and allows Pantaloon Retail to benefit from the industry expertise and sourcing network of the world's largest office products company.

"The office products business in India presents tremendous opportunities for growth. Through our partnership with Staples, the industry leader, we can become the office products provider of choice for businesses throughout India," Pantaloon Retail MD and CEO Kishore Biyani said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

"As Staples expands globally, India represents a great opportunity for the company," Staples chairman and chief executive officer Ron Sargent said.
