Shriram Properties Ltd, a part of the $4.2-billion Shriram group, on Tuesday said the company would be setting up a 5-million sq. ft IT park in a special economic zone in Chennai.
Speaking to media persons, Mr M. Murali, managing director, Shriram Properties Ltd, said the company would be setting up an IT park at the 57.9-acre Standard Motors property. The project has received the special economic zone status from the government, he added. The company had acquired the Standard Motors land for Rs 154.10 crores from the official liquidator through the Madras high court order.
Meanwhile, Shriram Properties has authorised Matex Net to sell the Standard Motors’ plant and machinery through an e-auction, reverse auction, forward auction and corporate exchange programme.
The Standard Motors site contains more than 60 sheds and 1,000 pieces of machinery, which have been segregated into lots and grouped to provide optimum value to potential buyers.
To be held on September 27, the e-auction will enable buyers from across the country to participate in the real-time online transaction. The e-auction, according to Mr S. JaganniVasan, managing director of Matex, would increase efficiency, transparency, reduce errors and make the auction process faster.

September 20, 2006, 10:40 am
More than 30,000 villages have been provided with Village Public Telephones (VPTs) under the rural telephony component of the Bharat Nirman Programme.
According to a statement issued by the ministry of telecommunication, "As against the target of providing VPTs in 66,822 uncovered villages under the programme, 30,251 villages have been provided VPTs as on August 31, 2006." In the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh, more than 50 per cent of the targeted villages have been provided with VPTs, it adds.
Under the programme, 14,183 remotely located villages have been planned to be connected through Digital Satellite Phone Terminals (DSPTs). In the states like Orissa and Jharkhand, 100 per cent uncovered villages are envisaged to be provided with DSPTs. The steps are being taken to deploy satellite-based equipment to provide VPTs in the remotely-located villages. For expeditious rollout in some of these villages, existing wireless technology WLL (Wireless in Local Loop) is also being deployed.
Under the Bharat Nirman Programme, 66,822 revenue villages in the country, which have not yet been provided with a Village Public Telephone (VPT), shall be covered by November, 2007. Out of the above, 14,183 remotely-located villages will be provided VPTs through DSPTs.
An estimated sum of Rs 451 crores would be incurred to provide subsidy support for these VPTs.
