Air pollution notice slapped on Gujarat State Electricity Corporation


The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has slapped yet another notice on the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL) for the emission of toxic gases from its thermal power station (TPS) located in Sector 30 of Gandhinagar .

A senior GPCB official said the notice was issued after it was found during the recent monitoring of ambient air quality here. The TPS had emitted toxic gases like NO2 and SO2, thus violating the prescribed RSPM (respiratory suspended particulate matter) limit of 100.

India's gov't survives confidence vote


NEW DELHI (AP) -- India's government survived a bruising political battle to win a confidence vote Tuesday, reviving a landmark nuclear energy deal with the United States that is at the center of an emerging partnership between the world's two largest democracies.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Congress party fought hard to secure victory, and appeared to cut back room deals when all else failed. An airport was named after one lawmaker's father, another was promised a high-level job and - rival politicians allege - many others received millions of dollars in bribes.

Vaghelas end maun vrat after meeting Modi, sympathisers feel betrayed


The father of the two boys who died under mysterious circumstances at the Asaram Ashram early this month, disappointed many of their supporters on Tuesday when they met Chief Minister Narendra Modi and broke their maun vrat. The state government has proudly claimed all credit for the end of fast in a press release, although the Vaghelas have maintained that they have only ended their silent protest and it was their own call to end it.

An official press release on Tuesday stated that the Vaghelas broke their fast and maun vrat at the bungalow of Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, Director General of Police P C Pande and Additional Secretary of the CM, G C Murmu. The CM himself handed a glass of lemonade to the Vaghelas, the release added.
