January 25, 2007, 9:33 am
After the successful launch in Hyderabad and Jaipur, Reliance Retail Ltd. on Wednesday expanded its reach into the first metro, with the launch of 12 pilot Reliance Fresh stores in Chennai.
Targeted at all income groups, 12 pilot Fresh stores would have an area of 1,200 to 3,500 sq ft and would sell fresh fruits and vegetables, staples, top-grocery and dairy products.
Addressing mediapersons here, Gunender Kapur, president and CEO of Reliance Fresh, said, "Our retail offering will deliver a win-win partnership between farmers and customers with unmatched affordability, quality, choice and services to the consumer."
This will be built on an integrated platform with world-class supply chain, logistics and IT infrastructure, he added.
The group has earmarked Rs 25,000 crores over the next four-five years for the retail venture and would come out with hypermarket, speciality stores and rural hubs in urban and rural areas.
In future, the company would launch cash and forward format too. With every outlet, the company is aiming at 3,000 households in a 2-km catchment area.
Reliance Retail has set up 10 collection centres in Tamil Nadu and would increase these centres to 20 by this year, Mr Kapur said.
He said Reliance would roll out its next outlets in Vijayawada and Vizag in Andhra Pradesh.
The company would also launch its private label, ‘Reliance Select’ in staple products.
"Initially, we will be coming out with Reliance Select in rice, wheat, sugar and we would increase the product portfolio gradually," he said.
With the launch of its stores in Chennai, Reliance Retail has 40 stores in three cities with about total area of about 90,000 sq ft.

SriLankan Airlines on Wed-nesday announced expansion of operations in India with the launch of twice a day flights to Mumbai from February. With the addition of seven new flights to Mumbai, SriLankan will now have 94 flights a week from India.
"We want to hit a century of weekly flights to India soon, and we will achieve this with much ease as there are no Dhonis in the aviation sector," said Senaka Fernando, regional manager, Indian subcontinent and Maldives.
