Microsoft to launch DPM soon

Microsoft Corp., the wo-rld’s largest software ma-ker, will be launching the new version of its Data Protection Manager, a data protection product designed to protect Microsoft Applications and the Microsoft Servers which was largely developed at the Microsoft India Development Centre in Hyderabad, Bob Muglia, senior vice-president of Server and Tools Business (STB), said here on Tuesday.

In an exclusive interaction with this newspaper, Mr Muglia, who heads the $10 billion STB at Microsoft, said the DPM is designed to deliver continuous data protection for Microsoft application and file servers using seamlessly integrated disk and tape media.

"The market for data protection is changing and we believe that the disk will be more important in terms of data backup. The new version, a lot of which was designed and developed by the MIDC, will be launched early next year," he said.

According to Mr Muglia, the MIDC, which currently has 1,200 employees, was also involved in the development of Microsoft’s Lo-nghorn server, the first ma-jor upgrade of the Microsoft Server 2003, and Windows Vista. "The Longhorn Server is also expected to be launched next year. The team at the IDC is critical to Microsoft’s key R&D work," he said.

Microsoft had started the IDC in 1998, and the development centre is the largest such facility outside of the company’s headquarters in Redmond, US. "The IDC teams work in tandem with teams in Redmond to design and deliver products for Microsoft worldwide," he said. Asked when Microsoft would begin shipping the Windows Vista, the new desktop operating system, Mr Muglia said, "Very soon."

City on track to progress with second rly terminal

THERE is good news for those who are eagerly waiting for conversion of Sabarmati railway station into the second terminal for Ahmedabad. The Ministry of Railways will announce a Rs 19-crore proposal for this in the next railway budget.

According to Union Minister of State for Railways Naranbhai Rathwa, the proposal is being scrutinised by the Railway Board and it will be included in the next budget. He said this while addressing a function to inaugurate a Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system, a clean train station scheme, and also an AC waiting lounge at main railway station at Kalupur on Tuesday.

When the Sabarmati station is developed as the second terminal, it will reduce congestion at the existing station at Kalupur. Besides, people from the western side of the city travelling to Delhi side will not have to go to Kalupur.

The minister said that once the laying of Kalol-Gandhinagar line was completed, a new station building for Gandhinagar would be taken up. The two tasks would then enable the railways to run trains like Rajdhani Express to Delhi via Gandhinagar.

Rathwa promised that a dedicated western corridor with double track for freight movement would be developed. He said the 1,370-km-long corridor would take seven years for completion and global tenders would be issued for this. He, however, categorically declined any possibility of laying a third Mumbai-Ahmedabad link saying it was ‘‘absolutely impossible’’.

He said this when local MLA Faruq Shaikh demanded introduction of a third track for running 150 kmph-speed trains. Rathwa said that on November 18-19, Samkhiali-Gandhidham BG conversion would be inaugurated completing the Gandhidham-Palanpur line conversion. ‘‘First passenger train would run on this track by December-end,’’ he added.

Earlier, the minister inaugurated the new RRI system for Ahmedabad station and clean train station scheme besides a renewed waiting hall for AC passengers. The RRI system will help Ahmedabad railway station at Kalupur to easily manage the movements of 250 trains passing through the station daily. Till now, in the absence of such a system, arrival of trains used to get delayed by half an hour to one hour causing difficulties to passengers. With the RRI system in place, trains from Maninagar side will take only five minutes to reach Ahmedabad.

Under the clean train station scheme introduced here, for the first time in Gujarat, the railways have given contract to Eureka Forbes, a private company, to clean around 30 trains coming to Ahmedabad station daily during their 20-minute halt. This will cost the Railway Rs 1 crore a year.

‘‘This is less than what the railways used to pay to safai staff so far by way of salaries,’’ the minister claimed. The clean train station scheme has already been introduced in 16 important cities elsewhere in the country, said Sanjay Jalla of Eureka Forbes, adding that it would be introduced in Jaipur next. Later, addressing reporters, the minister said the Western Railway would develop a new building for Gandhinagar railway station at a cost of Rs 3 crore.

What’s on track
* Development of Sabarmati station
* New building for Gandhinagar station
* Western corridor for freight movement
* Completion of Kalol-Gandhinagar line
