THE country’s first privately operated airport, ready for flight take-offs,

THE country’s first privately operated airport, ready for flight take-offs, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at Mehsana on Monday. Increasing air traffic at the Ahmedabad domestic and international airport forced the Government to scour the rest of the State for alternative options.

As part of the Vibrant Gujarat MoU, the State Government entered into a public-private partnership with the Ahmedabad Aviation and Aeronautics (AAA), a flying training school and air charter company to set up a general aviation airport at Mehsana. Mahendra Vyas, CEO of AAA, says, “The Mehsana airport is a general aviation airport. It is open to all aviation activity except scheduled airline flights.” The airport will be available for charter services, personal flying and pilot training.

Currently, AAA operates its pilot training school at Ahmedabad international airpor with almost 200 students and 80 of whom are ready to fly at any given time, the new airport will be a boon for the student pilots.

“Increasing air activity is a worldwide phenomenon and so is the constant scuffle for space between airport and pilot trainings. The scheduled airline activity at Ahmedabad airport has exploded in the last few years. The airport at Mehsana will solve a mutual problem of the flying training school and the airport authorities,” says Vyas.

District Collector Ajay Bhadoo says, “The new airport will open the skies for Mehsana. Easier accessibility to Mumbai will encourage trading. The youth of Mehsana will also have another educational and professional opportunity.”
