Sharp will branch out in March

Sharp Corporation, the $23.61 billion Japanese consumer electronics giant, which bought out the Kalyani group’s stake in Sharp India Ltd, will be branching out on its own from March, sources familiar with the development said on Wednesday.

The Kalyani group had formed a joint venture with Sharp in 1986, Kalyani Sharp Ltd, and the company set up a consumer electronics manufacturing unit in Pune. The unit began functioning in 1989.

The sources said Sharp would be launching a clutch of new televisions, DVD players, refrigerators and other consumer electronics in March. Despite having the Sharp brand name, the Indian joint venture could never make an impact in the market, probably because of the price factor.

The company had a modest presence in the export market. "Sharp has lined several new products for the launch in March. The company has decided to make its portfolio price competitive. The prices of most products will be between Rs 1,000-Rs 1,500 more than the average price," the sources said.

Sharp and other Japanese and Korean are expected to drop prices on CTVs in September this year, once the Indo-Thailand Free Trade Agreement comes into full force. Sharp reportedly imports 30 per cent of its products from Thailand. Prices of colour TVs could drop over six per cent from September.
