Intel to launch new processors this year

Global chip maker Intel said it will roll out a new range of processors this year that will enable users to download music, videos and play games on their Internet-enabled mobile handsets.

"We will start the process (of building new processors) in the middle of this year and the products would be rolled out simultaneously. The new processors would be aimed at ultra mobile devices which may include laptops and Internet-enabled mobile phones such as Blackberry," Intel South Asia Managing Director R Sivakumar said.

The new processors would allow users to access Internet at a much faster rate, listen to music, watch videos and play games while on the move. Sivakumar said the software used in mobile devices to access Internet is actually meant for Personal Computers and not for such devices.

Intel would launch processors that would be suited for accessing the web through a small screen with the same processing power as one would get in a PC, he added.

The company would also come out with Wimax-enabled products such as laptops and mobile devices. But for such products to be a success in India, the regulators and the government should look into the release of Wimax spectrum to enable Companies to roll out Wimax network across the country.

Commenting on low-cost PCs, he said: "The price point should come down in a natural progression... with increasing competition and volumes combined with low-cost manufacturing, prices of computers would ultimately fall in the years to come." However, low-cost PCs should not compromise on quality and speed factors, he added.
