A Couple committed suicide in a hotel room near Ahmedabad airport on Saturday night. The police said they had an extramarital affair and took the extreme step after realising that their families will not accept their relationship.
The two, identified as Ganpat Soni (39), a resident of Bardolpura in Dariapur, and Renuka Khandelwal (32) from Janakpuri Apartment in the Subhash Bridge area, consumed poison in room no 118 of Hotel Taj Palace Ummed. The Sardarnagar police have registered a case of accidental death.
The two visited the hotel on late night with a bag. When they did not come out of the room for a long time, the hotel authorities opened the door and found the two dead. They immediately informed the police. The police found some tablets in a plastic tin in the room, some of which were mixed in cold drink which they had consumed.
According to the police, the two were married and had children. They fell in love two years ago when Renuka was living on rent at Soni's house in Dariapur along with her husband Naresh and two children. Soni was a father of three children.
Soon, their families came to know about the relationship. And after regular quarrels over the issue, the Khandelwals shifted to a new house in the Subhash Bridge area.
Inspector A S Rathod said, “The affair continued amid opposition by the two families. Following this, Soni's family members were to call some leaders of their society to bring an end to their relationship on Saturday.”
“It is quite possible that the two committed suicide to avoid a bad name and humiliation in front of the leaders of the society,” Rathod added. The police have taken statements of the members of the two families, who confirmed the relationship between the two.
