The residents of Madhavpura observed an impromptu bandh on Monday to protest against an incident of police brutality, wherein a 19-year-old boy was beaten up severely by three policemen.
So brutal was the beating that the victim, Bipin Thakor, an autorickshaw driver, had to have close to 400 stitches on different parts of his body. The incident took place close to the home of city Mayor Kanoji Thakor.
It was the Mayor who called an ambulance to take the bleeding youth to the hospital. But even his intervention did not translate into badly injured boy got some attention at the hospital. Bipin's family members claimed that he just lay at the hospital for about 18 hours before he got some treatment.
The incident occurred around 4 am on Sunday when Bipin was sleeping on a pavement outside the Madhavpura Commercial Complex, as his home was being renovated.
The three policemen, posted at the Madhavpura police station, were allegedly in an inebriated state. After spotting Bipin on the pavement, they kicked him awake. They took him to the Idgah Chowki and beat him up by baton before dropping him back at the same spot.
After around half an hour, they returned while the boy was nursing his injuries. This time they beat him up with leather belts with steel buckles, and even used knives before fleeing the spot. Bipin's right ear was sheared away, a couple of his fingers chopped off, besides injuring his head, neck, hands and other parts.
A local spotted a bleeding Bipin lying on the pavement in the early hours, and informed the Mayor. The Mayor said: "I called up the108 ambulance service and also the hospital later to see that he got proper treatment. I visited the boy on Sunday night, but he was being operated upon at that time. We will support his family with the treatment costs."
However, the boy's family has already spent around Rs 5,000, a big amount for them. "No one has helped us so far," said Bipin's uncle, Babubhai Thakore. Bipin lost his father four years ago. He stays with his mother, two brothers and an uncle's family. His family members live by cleaning shops and driving rickshaws.
His mother Madhuben Thakore alleged that the accused policemen even took away Rs 9,200, which was with Bipin.
Bipin said he recognised two of the three policemen. "It was Mavjibhai and Lakshman Singh, along with another policeman. They were drunk, and did not even tell me as to why they were doing this to me," he said.
The three, who are absconding, have been booked under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
