Modi’s effigy burnt after rape of class I student in his constituency

The agitation over the alleged rape of a Class I student of the Jivkorva Lallubhai School by its sweeper continued for the second day on Thursday in Maninagar.

The parents and student leaders demanded that the accused should be handed over to them. Youth Congress leaders burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, as the incident took place in his constituency.

One of the protesting parents said: “Unless the school authorities guarantee safety of our children, we can't even think of sending our wards to school. We will not let the school function unless we get it in writing. The school authorities are trying to fool us.”

The Parent's Association and Youth Congress members had called for a bandh and had sought a meeting with the school authorities.

Shardul Desai, a member of the Parent's. Association, said: "The trustee (Manu Shah) didn't turn up at the meeting to answer our concerns. The parents demanded the principal to apologise on behalf of Manu Shah. However, the principal was taken to the hospital as her blood pressure shot up on seeing the agitation.”

Earlier, the parents rallied from the Khokra crossroads to the JL School. They passed the police station shouting “Modi hai hai” and pelted stones at the school and police station.

Five people were detained by the Maninagar police for rioting outside the police office and 12 others for burning effigies of Modi and Shah.

National Students Union of India (NSUI) general secretary Nirav Baxi confirmed that the police rounded up a few of their members. All of them were later taken to a local court, the police said.
