Muslim cleric arrested from Danilimda was wanted in connection with old riot case
Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that not a single arrest has been made in connection with the serial blasts in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
He said that a Muslim cleric arrested from the city’s Danilimda locality an hour after the blasts, was wanted in connection with an old riot case. The arrest has nothing to do with Saturday’s blasts, he said.
He told media persons after the weekly Cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar that though it was premature to say if there was any ISI hand behind the blasts, the terror attacks appeared to be a part of an “international conspiracy.”
“Ahmedabad’s was the 12th terrorist attack in the country. The modus operandi was the same as adopted in the attacks elsewhere before. Although these blasts across the country still remain undetected, investigating agencies suspect an international conspiracy in the attacks, including the one in Ahmedabad,” he said.
He said the Gujarat Police was investigating the Ahmedabad blasts with the help of the Mumbai, Delhi and Rajasthan Police and the CBI. He said the involvement of “local contacts” in the blasts could not be ruled out.
He, however, did not reply when questioned why the state IB wing had failed to identify the ‘local contacts.’
Responding to another query, the Home Minister said: “There is a technical difference between the Ahmedabad blasts and the live bombs which were recovered and subsequently defused in Surat. While in Surat, electric devices were detected along with the bombs, in Ahmedabad, timers were used in the explosives.
When questioned how a live bomb was found on a tree top and from a hoarding in Surat, Shah said, “We’ll let you know about this after the culprits are nabbed.”
Meanwhile, Shaktisinh Gohil, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said: “There is something fishy about most of the live bombs being recovered from a single locality in Surat after the Ahmedabad blasts. The state government should get this investigated by an independent agency.”
