Ashram deaths: Parents demand probe by CBI

The parents of the two minor boys who died at the Asaram Ashram gurukul near Sabarmati last month have renewed their demand for a CBI probe. The two boys went missing under mysterious circumstances on July 3 and their mutilated bodies were found on the Sabarmati riverbed two days later.

Shantilal Vaghela told the media at a conference organised by the Jagega Gujarat Sangharsh Samiti, an NGO, that the CID (Crime) had failed to make any headway in the case.

Shantilal and his brother Praful had gone on a fast and a maun vrat in the midst of a public agitation last month over the sloppy investigations into the case. Later the brothers met Chief Minister Narendra Modi who assured them of a proper investigation into the deaths.

Shantilal said they broke the maun vrat only because Modi had assured them of a better investigation than by the CBI. He said Praful ended his fast only three days ago due to deteriorating health. Shantilal added that they met Modi under pressure from BJP legislator Govind Prajapati and other party workers.

Prakash Kapadiya, president of the Jagega Gujarat Sangharsh Samiti, meanwhile, said they will renew the agitation against the government and the police by sitting on symbolic fasts for 72 hours from August 8 at the Income Tax circle. “If the police do not take satisfactory steps in the case, we will start a public agitation from August 11,” Kapadiya said. Shantilal Vaghela said they will support the agitation by the Jagega Gujarat Sangharsh Samiti.
