Young people in love sometimes have to face many legal complications when they choose to walk down the aisle sans the wishes of their families. Young Students Service Club, Gujarat is perhaps an answer to their problems.
It is a group formed by three advocates and operates out of a small office near the Rajkot Court Complex. They have started a legal advice cell to take care of all the doubts of people who have attained marriageable age but cannot marry partners of their choice because of family opposition.
The cell makes them aware about their legal rights and provides counseling to prevent break-ups, depressions and even suicide.
“Honour killings, forced separation etc. are still common in our society,” says Arun Dave, one of the three founders of the group that now plans to expand to other parts of the state. “Through counseling, we try to show the way to a happy married life, while smoothly handling social and legal obstacles coming in the way of the couples,” he added.
Dave (3
, an expert in family law, had lost a close friend 12 years ago when he committed suicide after being tortured by the family of the girl he wanted to marry. The incident moved him so much that he decided to do something for lovelorn couples after becoming a lawyer.
In the last four years, over 600 couples from Saurashtra have come to them for counselling. Atul Pandya and Atul Mehta, the other two members of the group, are criminal lawyers. The three friends meet couples in distress after court hours.
The group advises young couples to go ahead with their marriage plans and not to bow down to any pressure. “If you are adults, then go ahead. Be happy and don’t worry,” says Dave.
The group can be contacted on the following phone numbers: (0281) 2375157, 9825371655, and 9426782550.
