National carriers clip wings following losses

Aviation companies like Indian, have withdrawn some flights in the Ahmedabad route after incurring heavy losses.

The Thursday Kolkata-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Kolkata flight IC-267 has been withdrawn, while the Monday, Wednesday and Friday Ahmedabad-Jaipur-Kolkata flight IC-269 has been withdrawn too.

The Ahmedabad-Delhi flight IC-818 has been made direct as the IC-861 (Delhi-Ahmedabad) flight stands withdrawn. In all, nine flights (domestic as well as international) have been re-scheduled.

Officials at the Airport Authority of India (AAI) believe it is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain flights because of competitive prices. Speaking about the route adjustments, airport manager Suhas Jadhav said it had become essential to make optimum use of flights. Rajesh Bhatia, zonal manager of Kingfisher Airlines said cancellations and re-scheduling of flights has been effected in view of price sensitivity in the Ahmedabad market. He said that the flights withdrawn may be re-introduced in November this year.

“The flights can be reintroduced after a review of the passenger situation after a month. It is typically a high demand period for the aviation industry, so all the flights that have been withdrawn, will most probably be re-introduced,” he said.

Ahmedabad being a price-sensitive market, it has been affected by the cut-throat competition in a major way, said AAI terminal manager V P Ram.

“The frequency of flights to Delhi and a few other destinations has been reduced. Moreover, there has been a drastic cut in the number of passengers, which is why flights via Ahmedabad have been affected,” he said.

He added: “Most of the aviation companies are looking at maximising profits and reducing the number of underused flights. Because of the competition, the fares have been low.”

However, the authorities are optimistic and say that the situation will soon be under control and the flights will be re-started soon.
