Banking transactions worth over Rs 20,000 crore came to a grinding halt when Class III employees of the RBI refrained from work demanding staff recruitment and opposing job outsourcing, on Wednesday.
The nationwide strike call given by the All India Reserve Bank Employees Association was a total success in Ahemdabad, with over 50,000 employees of all the public sector and co-operative banks striking work.
“The strike was a total success and banking functions at RBI, Ahmedabad suffered badly,” said Dushyant Trivedi, president, Maha Gujarat Bank Employees Union. In all, eight different unions supported the bandh call.
The Communist Party of India supported the bandh. The State Bank of India employees, however, did not take part in it.
The agitating bank employees gathered at the main branch of Dena Bank on the Ashram Road in Ahmedabad and carried out a protest march. According to the bank unions, the RBI management has stopped recruitment in the Class-III cadre for the last 20 years. This has resulted in the reduction of the Class-III staff strength at the Ahmedabad office from 647 in 1994 to 222 by June 2008.
The agitating employees have common demands such as recruitment of staff and a halt on privatisation and job outsourcing.
Meanwhile, all officers and non-gazetted employees of the Income Tax Department observed the nationwide strike called by the Confederation of Central Government Officers and Employees to protest against the non-fulfilment of the charter of demands.
The I-T employees have demanded a renewed recruitment in government services; removal of negative and discriminatory features from the 6th Pay Commission recommendations; a total halt on outsourcing; strict implementation of labour laws; urgent steps to contain price rise; extension of the farmer loan waiver scheme to loans from private moneylenders; and the extension of easy credit facility to peasants at a lower interest rate by nationalised banks.
