Almost a month after the July 26 Ahmedabad serial blasts, the government has decided to haul up the security structure at public places across Gujarat.

Security has been tightened at railway stations, airports, bus terminuses, where the government is trying to utilise the security apparatus to its maximum.

Jjitendrakumar Jayan, Public Relation Officer (PRO), Western Railway (WR) said: “The security level at all railway stations under Western Railway has been increased in wake of the blasts. We have increased the number of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras from 13 to 20 at the Kalupur railway station in Ahmedabad.”

He added: “The footage from the CCTVs is recorded 24 hours and two police officers are on duty in the CCTV control room round the clock. Even now, we have CCTVs installed at all major WR junctions.”

Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials at Ahmedabad said: “Security at the airport was tightened in view of the August 15 celebrations, much before the July 26 bomb blasts. We always have optimum security at the airport. There is no requirement for deploying more personnel at the airport,” said B P Bhagat, Ahmedabad Airport Director.

On the other hand, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has deployed additional security personnel at all the bus depots and terminuses in the state.

A senior GSRTC official told Newsline: “We have police officers carrying out checks on buses at regular intervals. A week after the blasts, there was a substantial drop in passenger list, but now the situation is back to normal and people are travelling as much as they used to earlier.”

In view of the terror threat, the government has also called for enhanced security at the shopping malls and multiplexes. But the security scenario at gardens, schools and colleges leave a lot to be desired.
