Number of college seats sliding

Even as the high court ordered transfer of students of medical college in Valia, now the Kesarsal Medical College in Ahmedabad is in a fix on how to find solution to the problems pointed out by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Just like the college in Valia, Kesarsal medical college has also not seen a new batch of students for the past four years. In fact, none of the medical colleges in the entire state have seen an increase in the number of seats in the last three years, informs Pranay Shah, member secretary of Joint Admission Committee for Medical Colleges in Gujarat.

“Due to closure of admissions in Kesarval and Valia colleges, 200 seats decreased as each college had a capacity of 100 seats. As a result, a lot of our students went out. Gujarat has very less number of seats,” he said.

Among the government colleges, BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, offers 250 seats, Government Medical College (Vadodara) has 186 seats, MP Shah Medical College (Jamnagar) offers 175 seats, Government Medical College Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar have 150, 100 and 100 seats each.

Among the self-financed medical colleges, Pramukh Sawani Medical College (Anand) has a capacity of 100 seats, C U Shah (Surendranagar) offers 100 seats, N H Medical and Surat Municipal Medical College have 100 seats each.

“This apart, B K Shah Medical College of Waghodia, which has earned the status of a deemed university, reduced 150 seats from the common admission procedures. Now, the college conducts its own admission procedure,” said JAC member Jignesh Chauhan. Nevertheless, there has been an increase of 50 seats at two dental colleges.

Executive Council Member of MCI, Ketan Desai, said: “Among the 16 medical colleges in Gujarat, only two have had infrastructure problems in the past…. Infrastructure problems may reduce over the years as it has reduced in Surendranagar Medical College.”

After the Municipal College Maninagar's affiliation with LG hospital, the number of seats in medical colleges is likely to increase from next year. “We need to put a check on our students heading elsewhere,” Shah added.
