Comes out with full-page ad in local dailies suggesting ways to combat terror
The Information Department of the Gujarat government released a full page advertisement in the local dailies on Tuesday on means to combat terror. The ad issued in Gujarati urged all citizens to come together to wipe out terrorism.
It also listed the precautions the people should take in their various day-to-day activities.
The ad comes with some ‘interesting’ observations and provides a checklist of signs to identify a terrorist.
It says: A terrorist could be a person loitering around in a coat or jacket in summer, or without one in winter. A terrorist will walk uninvited into community programmes and try to strike polite conversation with the people. Also, if a person's clothes bulge at all the wrong places, it may be because he is hiding a bomb or a weapon inside, the advertisement says.
Bhagyesh Jha, Director, Information Department, said all suggestions listed in the advertisement were formulated carefully based on intelligence reports. “We went through everything in the advertisement before it was released. All the suggestions made are based on intelligence inputs,” he said.
P P Pandey, Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) said: “The tips in the advertisement are based on inputs provided by us.”
The ad also asks people to spot differences in the front and rear number plates of vehicles. The police should be informed if a car is found tilting suspiciously due to a heavy boot, the ad says.
Car dealers in the state have also been advised to carry out a thorough check on customers from other parts of the country interested in buying or selling vehicles. The locals have, however, been exempted from this. But the advisory does insist on verifying the documents of the customers , including retaining a photograph of the customer for record.
The ad further narrows down the search by telling people that the terrorists may be found in places like hospitals, railway and bus stations, religious places and malls.
There are also pointers in the advertisement that highlight the steps be taken in case of a terrorist attack. It says that people should look for safer places away from high-rise buildings or parking lots and contact the police.
The advertisement ends with a call to ‘come together and identify them.’
A Modi confidant said: “Certainly, the advertisement has political implications. While there has been a significant restraint in the party's reaction after the blast, with most of the suspected masterminds arrested from all over the country, Modi has already proved his mettle as a tough fighter against terrorism. These advertisements will only project him as an effective leader ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.”
valuable Suggestions
In case of a terrorist attack:
Run to a safe place, avoid high-rises and parking lots. Inform the police.
After the attack:
Call 100, follow police instructions. Leave the site immediately and make way for security vehicles.
In property dealings: Get the details of the person in question, including documents establishing his/her identity. In case of suspicion, call the police.
How can you help
Remember the faces of people who look suspicious.
Unclaimed objects at bus stations, railway stations and airports must be reported to the police. In case of an emergency, call 100 immediately.
Co-operate with the security agencies in case of any investigation or inquiry.
Impractical suggestions
Ways to spot a terrorist: Anyone who wears clothes that aren’t suitable for that season. Any uninvited person who tries to mingle in community gatherings. Clothes that bulge out may be hiding bombs and weapons. Be cautious of car buyers and seller from outside Gujarat.
