Twelve rescue teams from Gujarat have saved around 250 marooned people in flood-ravaged Bihar in the five days they have been there.
As many as 61 officers of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) and the Surat Fire Brigade are busy with the rescue and relief operations at Supaul under the guidance of the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA).
Rajesh Bhatt, the leader of the Ahmedabad rescue team said the Kosi waters have spread far and wide, but now things were improving.
“With the water levels receding and the inflow from the upper parts of Nepal having stopped, things have eased to some extent. But there will be a shortage of safe places to lodge the rescued people,” he said.
He added that people were apprehensive of leaving their homes as they feared they would lose their belongings during their absence.
He said the teams were in constant touch with the GSDMA and AFES officials in Gujarat for directions on the rescue operations. “We talk over the phone at least twice a day,” Bhatt said.
The team is undertaking rescue operations in Hasanpur, Daheria, Chakla, Chhattarpur, Kuti, Nadia, Hariharpur, Surjapur, Forbesganj, Araria and Saharsa.
