Court extends remand of 5 blasts accused by five days

A metropolitan court on Wednesday extended the police remand of five of the arrested SIMI men including its general secretary, Safdar Nagori, by five days.

The Ahmedabad City Detection Crime Branch (DCB), the agency investigating the blasts, pleaded before the court to extend the remand, as the accused are yet to divulge all the information wanted in the case. Metropolitan Magistrate G M Patel said in his order that the offences are of a very serious nature; and since the accused have not yet divulged everything, more time is required by the investigating agency.

V R Tolia, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DCB, who appeared before the court, said: “During the course of investigation, we have now collected strong evidence of the role of Nagori and others in setting up terror training camps at different places in the country, including the one at Halol. We need more time to find out about these camps and their role in hatching the conspiracy.”

The DCB told the court that they need more time because during Ramzan the accused would be praying more, leaving less time for investigation. The investigating agency also said that they also have evidence to show how the training camps were planned and run.

“We found jihadi literature, CDs and DVDs during the course of our investigation. The CDs and DVDs show the various stages of bomb making, how to collect the material, make the timer devices, and so on. During questioning, the accused have also revealed this information,” said Tolia.

The DCB officers said that all the five accused are educated and know how to dodge questions. They are not fully cooperating during the investigation, they said.

The counsel of the accused, Advocate Hashim Qureshi, opposed the remand application and contended that the police have no concrete evidence to establish the role of the accused in the blasts.

“Nagori and the others were in jail when the blasts took place. If the police argument is based on the training camps, then they should prosecute them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Why link them to the blasts when the police have nothing on record to corroborate that? They have already been interrogated enough on the basis of suspicion,” said Qureshi.

The DCB had brought Aamil Pervez, Asif Hussain, Sibli Abdul and Qamruddin Nagori, brother of SIMI ideologue Safdar Nagori, to Ahmedabad from Madhya Pradesh on August 23 and had named them as accused in the serial blasts case. Nagori was brought to the city on August 25. All the five accused were remanded in police custody till September 3.
