A constable with the city police shot at a shop owner in the mutton bazaar area in Mirzapur on Sunday morning. The victim, Mehmood Khan, received a bullet injury on his right leg and is under treatment at the V S Hospital here.
Mystery, however, shrouds the incident. Even as investigations are on, both Khan and Mukhtiyar Saiyed (43), the police constable, have now lodged cross-complaints against each other.
Khan has alleged in his statement that Saiyed used to extort money from the shop owners in the area. When he refused to pay Saiyed, the latter shot him, he said. The incident occurred around 7.30 am. After the incident, an enraged group of shop owners reportedly started beating Saiyed.
In his counter-complaint, Saiyed alleged that a group of around 10 butchers led by Khan attacked him with swords and pipes and that he had to open fire in self-defence. He said the incident was the fallout of a police complaint he had filed against Khan lately.
The police have now lodged complaints on Khan and his accomplices on charges of attempt to murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy. On the other hand, complaints have been lodged against the constable for causing hurt.
The police say that Saiyed was carrying a licensed firearm and cannot be booked under the Arms Act. But the police have failed to explain what Saiyed was doing at the site, when he is posted with the surveillance squad of the Gaekward Haveli police station. They have also failed to explain why he was carrying a private firearm.
Shahpur Inspector M U Pathan said: “We have registered both the complaints and are investigating the case. More facts will come up during the course of the investigation.”
