State grants Rs 150 cr to develop six cities

The government has allocated Rs 150 crore as special grant to the six municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Junagadh to help them create necessary infrastructure in their respective cities. Surprisingly, the Surat Municipal Corporation does not figure in the list.

In a statement, State Urban Development Minister Nitin Patel said on Saturday that the six municipal corporations will utilise the amount for carrying out various developmental works in their respective towns. The development works relate to water supply and drainage, solid waste management, filtration plant, basic amenities in slums, sanitation and upgradation of public roads.

The funds provided by the government will help the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to implement different projects such as building of a four-lane railway overbridge near the Sola Crossing and construction of a new multi-storey building for the L G Hospital in the city. Similarly, the Vadodara civic body will be able to construct an indoor sports complex and overhead water tanks at Kalali and Bapod.

The Rs 100 crore funds allocated among these four municipal corporations of Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Junagadh will help them create basic civic amenities and infrastructure facilities for their citizens, the statement said.

Four of the six civic bodies that have been provided with the funds, fall in the Saurashtra region.
