Navratri: It's traffic cops' night out

Till October 8, all leaves for city cops stand cancelled . The reason is Navratri.

What means celebration to most, has translated into picketing and patrolling for city police officials, especially the traffic cops, who have been asked to report to important garba venues across the city.

The traffic policemen will bear the brunt. The 827 traffic policemen have been posted at GMDC ground for the traffic management. According to sources, on Tuesday half of the staff manned the route from airport to the ground - which brought VVIPs and VIPs including politicians and business community to the mega event.

Atul Karwal, joint commissioner of police (Traffic), told TOI that during Navratri the traffic policemen will be seen till late in the night on roads to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

"Efficient traffic management will be ensured at other important garba venues on SG Highway, Maninagar, Navrangpura, Memnagar and other parts. The traffic department is facing staff crunch but is confident that the police personnel will patrol the areas for any suspicious parking, parked vehicles that create inconvenience for others and late night speedsters," he said.

The special branch officials are also making it a point that the revellers do not go through unncessary hassles. "However, for the security of masses, people have to go through some security checks. We have issued licences to the garba organizers on the basis of 13 points including parking space, private security, electricity and security arrangements and expected guests. In addition to it, we have also asked them to check for any suspicious objects and inform the police patrol on venue or nearby," said a senior city police official.
