The incident took place when Snehal Vakharia, an employee of a private educational institute — Ahmedabad Education Management — was headed towards an angadia firm nearby, with the money.
Snehal later told police that on instructions from her boss, she was taking the money to be given to an angadia, for being despatched outside the city.
What has, however, surprised police is that bikers seemed to know that the woman was carrying Rs 5 lakh in cash in a plastic bag. “This is a mystery. How could the looters know that the bag contained the cash,” said police officials investigating the case.
The police officials added: “We have had cases of chain snatching, bags being looted from people who had withdrawn money from bank, but never of such an incident. Here the bikers seemed to have been tipped off that the woman would carry the cash to the angadia. They knew when to intercept and loot.” Cops suspect insiders’ role in this crime.”
“The woman says she had put the cash along with a camera worth Rs 3,000 and a mobile phone worth Rs 5,000 in a plastic carry bag and was walking down CG Road towards the angadia when the incident took place,” said Navrangpura police.
Near a women’s hostel off CG Road, two unidentified persons zoomed down on a bike. The riders snatched the plastic bag from her hand and sped towards HL Commerce College. Later a complaint was registered at the Navrangpura police station by Snehal.
Snehal told the police that she had shouted out for help as the bikers sped away. Some passersby had given chase but the bikers had managed to escape.
