Two shopkeepers arrested for purchasing goods pilfered from parcels

The Railway Protection Force (RPF), which has busted a racket of pilfering goods from parcels in railway coaches has arrested two shopkeepers from Anand and Ahmedabad. According to the police, the two purchased the stolen goods at reduced rates. The RPF officials are also suspecting the involvement of some more railway employees in the scam, which had been going on for atleast the last two months.

The two shopkeepers have been identified as Qadar Pathan (28) from Anand and Manoharlal Sejwani (52) from Ahmedabad. While Pathan is a salesman at Arati Selection, a readymade store, Sejwani runs a shop, Maheshwari Traders, at the Chokha Bazaar (Rice Market) in the Kalupur area of the city.

The two were arrested after the three earlier arrested in the case had confessed to their role in the scam.

The three arrested earlier include railway guard M A Qazi, his son Saeed Qazi and Nirmal Sewakramani. Sewakramani is believed to be the main accused in the scam.

Investigating Officer Uday Singh said; "With the help of M A Qazi, the accused were pilfering goods from parcels in the train. To conceal the misdeed, they pilfered small amounts, about five kg from a 50 kg parcels. The stolen goods were later purchased by shop keepers like Pathan and Sejwani."

The police have recovered 33 pairs of denim trousers from Pathan's shop and 41 kg cardamom and 8 kg cashew from Sejwani's shop. The police said the market price of cardamom is around Rs 800 per kg and Sejwani was getting the stolen material at half that price.

Singh said that the scam is a nexus between some railway employees, private shopkeepers and others.

"During investigations, we came across the names of some other railway guards who are also involved in the racket. They will be arrested after we collect enough evidence against them," he said. He did not rule out the possibility of arresting some more shopkeepers.
