Open book exam system not shut yet

Open book exam system , that was announced last month, only to be quickly withdrawn by a redfaced Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondar
y Education Board (GSHSEB ) after state government reprimanded officials for 'premature decision' , will now be subjected to public scrutiny after Diwali.

In a closed door meeting last month, board officials decided to make exams with open books compulsory for boards to be held next March, but the decision took everyone by surprise and had to be withdrawn.

GSHSEB sources said that board has drawn up an extensive list of people from four major categories - teachers, educationists , students and parents - who will be called to discuss merits and demerits of open book system. This will help authorities take a final call on the issue , which is likely to impact future of seven lakh students annually.

After the review, open book exam system may be tested on an experimental basis in 10-odd schools to find out its efficacy . "The list of representatives has been drawn up. Over 100 people will be consulted in each category," said board officials. Board is now debating whether review meetings with all stakeholders should be held in four zones covering different parts of state or be organised in a central zone like Gandhinagar or Ahmedabad.

It needs mention that board is taking each step with great caution after its previous move backfired. Board officials said that all activity related to this project is being kept under wraps as its chairman faced a lot of heat due to prior hasty announcement done to please Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Modi had mentioned open book system in his public address on Teacher's Day on September 5.

"After review, it will be implemented in 50-odd schools in Gujarat," said board officials.
