If you seek lip-smacking and quality sweets and fire crackers , at prices much below market rates, then Gandhinagar is the best bet thi
s Diwali.
High inflation rate and frequent Sensex fluctuations have forced the State Reserve Police jawans (group 12) in Gandhinagar to lend their bit during Diwali festivities. Sector 27 here is already bustling with various activities by SRP jawans.
Commandant of the group, RJ Sawani is getting his jawans to prepare a wide variety of sweets. Not just that, a couple of jawans will also visit fire cracker producers in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, to procure them at wholesale rates. These crackers will then be sold at low prices in outlets here. "This will ensure that quality fire crackers can be at prices much less than prevalent market rates," said SRP officials. This novel idea is rooted in SRP's desire to refurbish their image and also generate bonhomie between masses and jawans, who are often posted at violence-torn spots.
But, what is it that sparked this idea? Past experiences of Sawani when he was posted in Surat convinced him to repeat the act in Gandhinagar, where he is now posted . "In the last two years we set up stalls selling quality sweets and fire crackers in Vav in Surat and Ahmedabad. A total of Rs 39 lakh was earned," recounted Sawani.
This year it is Gandhinagar's turn as Commandant Sawani is posted in the state capital. "At first these Diwali goodies will be sold at affordable rates among SRP jawans' families. The general public is also welcome to buy products from our outlet," said Sawani.
These sweets will be sold between Rs 100 and Rs 110 for 1 kg where as the same is available between Rs 300 and Rs 400 in the market. Initially, the jawans will prepare 500 kg of sweets. "But, if demand rises then we will prepare more sweets," said SRP officials.
The goodies will be prepared as per professional standards and if need be, SRP authorities are not averse to taking assistance of some experienced cooks to train the jawans.
