AMD targets India farmers

The National Spot Exchange for. Agricultural Produce (NSEAP) announced on Thursday that it will use US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMDs) and personal Internet communicator (PIC) to connect over 7,500 agricultural produce marketing committees (APMC) across India. The initiative will offer complete affordable computing solutions, including broadband connectivity and pre-installed software, to farmers, sellers, traders and buyers in the agricultural supply chain nationwide.

US chipmaker AMD also gifted 200 PICs on the occasion. PICs are a new category FO affordable Internet access devices running on the Windows operating system, which are easy to use, designed to consume less power, and are virus-and dust-resistant.This move is an extension of AMD's 50x15 initiative to enable affordable Internet access and computing capabilities for 50 per cent of the world population by 2015.

"AMD's 50x15 initiative is about fostering long-term. Economic progress and investment within high growth markets like India and to develop the markets in ways that benefit a wide range of people and businesses," said AMD India president Ajay Marathe."This initiative will bring about a sea change in trading of agricultural produce across India. The PIC platform is the Ideal platform for providing our customers with an easy-to-use and low-power solution," said Financial Technologies (India) Ltd MD Jignesh Shah.
