Usage of IT has increased

The usage of information technology in India has increased substantially, though many corporations have expressed concerns over security, a new survey by the National Association of Software and Service Companies said on Monday.

The survey found that while as much as 67 per cent of the organisations surveyed had more than 90 per cent of their PCs connected to a local area network, there are still organisations with less than 25 per cent of PCs connected to LAN.

It said that 57 per cent of the organisations had only 50 per cent of their PCs connected to the Internet, while 28 per cent have more than 90 per cent of their PCs connected to the World Wide Web.

"Security continues to be the prime concern among the user organisations in the country. While there is adoption of advanced security systems, a large percentage of organisations surveyed still rely on anti virus software and firewalls," it said.

"Thirty-five of the surveyed organisations have moved to a level where almost all processes are automated. With only five per cent of organisations at the opposite end, using It for a few standalone applications, the Indian IT industry is moving in the right direction," the survey said, adding that IT benefits are resulting in adoption of new technologies.

"Almost 85 per cent of organisations believe that they have been able to derive benefits out of the IT implementation; 50 per cent of these respondents claim to have documentary evidence to support the claim as well," it said.

Mr Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom said, "Nasscom’s IT User survey indicates the trend among Indian IT vendors to increase their focus on the domestic market."
