Microsoft chairman and chief architect Bill Gates on Wednesday announced an investment plan of $1.7 billion in India. Reiterating his faith in "India’s potential to emerge as a key player on the world stage", Mr Gates announced Microsoft’s vision for India.
The world’s wealthiest man, Mr Gates, however, said at a CII organised CEO forum, that "It was important to sustain the growth by doubling the efforts in the areas of literacy, productivity, digitally inclusive society, and innovation."
The software giant would be investing $ 1.7 billion over a period of four years and also recruiting 3000 more people to further deepen its presence in India, he said. "The percentage increase in employees would be the highest in India," he said. "They will play a key part in product development, research and support services," Mr Gates said.
Microsoft’s investment will be aimed at intensifying efforts for creating a digitally inclusive society, strengthening the local knowledge economy, increasing geographical and enterprise across the country.
The company also plans to expand India in to a hub for its research, product, and applications development, services and technical support for both global and domestic industry.
"India has a huge role to play on the world stage. For this, you need to focus on four key areas: literacy, productivity, digital inclusion and innovation," he told a packed audience comprising corporate honchos, industrialists, bureaucrats, service officers and a crosssection of society.
