IT firms welcome Gates move

With Microsoft announcing its plans to invest $1.7 billion in India, IT companies are upbeat about the prospects of the information technology segment getting a further boost in the country. This is not the first time Microsoft is investing in India, but this time around, the investment figure is very large.

Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates announcement in New Delhi on Wednesday, follows those made by Intel Corporation, the world’s largest semiconductor chipmaker, which said it would be investing over $1 billion, and Cisco Systems’ proposal to invest $1.1 billion. Says Satish Maripuri, COO, Lionbridge Technologies, Inc., "Not only are there brilliant engineers here in India, we have been seeing that the entrepreneurial spirit of the businesses is second to none. Microsoft with this announcement has signalled to the world that the centre of gravity is moving eastwards to Asia and India and China will be the major forces in globalisation.

With increased macro-economic stability and increased forex reserves, the Indian investment climate is on the sunrise, India ranks among the top IT destinations for investment." "Microsoft’s decision to invest once again in building its presence in India is further evidence, if needed, of India’s global significance to the IT industry and of the quality and expertise of Indian software engineers," Mr Mirpuri said.

"Microsoft’s strategy to increasingly provide enterprice-strength platforms — as evidenced by the launch of SQLServer 2005 — is good for business as it enables our customers worldwide to benefit from the use of lower-cost, Intel-based hardware as they gradually migrate their legacy applications off mainframes," said Koen vanden Brande, chief technology officer of Polaris Software Lab.
