City to host acting, opera, theatre fusion on Jan 11

A one-man on-stage horror narrative performance combining acting, opera and cello-playing — dubbed by the London-based Brighton Magazine as “The Holy Grail of the Brighton Festival” —will hit the city on January 11.

Sharpwire, a five-person contemporary UK music theatre group, will perform Johnny’s Midnight Googles at the Natarani Darpana Academy at 8.30 pm to a free-entry audience.

The performance --- to be preceded by a late morning music theatre workshop for city thespians — is one leg of the British Council’s month-long Theatre Sutra.

The festival is an effort to bring together contemporary Indian and British thespians and ultimately, forge collaboration between traditional theatre genres and British contemporary theatre groups.

As part of the Theatre Sutra, groups of thespians from the UK will visit the National School of Drama for a round-table conference — discussing issues in theatre ranging from censorship to archiving.

Indian poet and librettist Jeet Thayil will also collaborate with UK-Swiss composer Edward Rushton and UK director John Fulljames on an opera based on ‘causes and defences of fundamentalism’ and its roots in the Mughal Dynasty.

In Ahmedabad, Sharpwire’s performance and workshop will be complemented by a display of books on British visual and performing arts.

The display, however, isn’t strictly limited to the genres — with books like E Good’s The Beatles: The Illustrated Biography and Ian Shirley's Pink Floyd Revealed sitting on the library's shelves next to other works like Contemporary Choreography .
