THE Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched a round-the-clock cleanliness drive in the flood-ravaged areas giving special attention to public places like gardens, parks and railway station, main thoroughfares and all the entry points.
About 8,000 safai workers, including workers hired on daily wages, had been given the task of Surat’s turnaround from Wednesday. The aim is to clean the city, and transform it into “KhoobSurat”, as it was before the floods, on a macro-level.
Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Joshi said, ‘‘Special attention is being given to the entry points, public places, areas within a kilometre of the railway station and main thoroughfares. Our aim is to present a clean image of the flood-ravaged city to the visitors from other states and cities.’’
Joshi said the safai workers have been given the task of performing their duties from 7 am to 2 am. They (safai workers) have been asked to brush up the main thoroughfares where the slush has dried up. Joshi said, ‘‘We have been receiving complaints of dust from the dried-up slush blowing in the winds. For this we have asked the fire department to clean up the roads by spraying water.’’
