Communications minister Dayanidhi Maran said on Thursday that the telecom department has set a target of providing 9 million broadband connections by the end of 2007 and 20 million connections by the end of 2010.
With the availability of new disruptive wireless broadband technology, such as WiMax, Mr Maran said that the country will start adding more than a million broadband connection per month before the end of 2007. He said that there would be a special emphasis on the Northeast states and Jammu and Kashmir.
Under the action plan it is envisaged that broadband coverage of all secondary and higher secondary schools, public health care centres and village panchayats would be provided by 2008. He said that 1,000 blocks will be connected by wireless broadband by December 2007.
The remaining 5,000 blocks will be provided wireless broadband by June 2008.
Funds for this would be provided by universal service obligatory(USO) fund.
Mr Maran said that BSNL, as part of their action plan, will add an average of 5 lakh broadband connections per month from January 2008. BSNL will also roll out IPTV in major cities. In addition to this, BSNL will aggressively roll out high speed broadband ( Wi-MAX) services.
