In response to another question by BJP MLA Nanubhai Vanali, he said the Central assistance for modernisation of the police force had been decreasing over the years despite the fact that Gujarat had 1,600-km long international sea borders, apart from a long and treacherous land border with Pakistan. The minister said that a sum of Rs 119.53 crore was allotted by the Centre in 2000-01 for modernising and equipping the state police with the latest and sophisticated arms. It came down to Rs 100 crore in 2004-05, Rs 92 crore in 2005-06 and Rs 49.33 crore in 2006-07.

In a written reply, Shah said the Central grant given to the Gujarat Police was Rs 48.97 crore in 2007-08, Rs 48 crore in 2008-09 and Rs 44.55 crore during 2009-10.

He said several proposals for police modernisation in Ahmedabad and the Desert Area Policing were submitted to the Centre, but there had been no response.
