GU finally approves nine self-financed BCA courses

Despite raging opposition from student leaders, the Gujarat University on Friday gave the final nod to the self-financed courses of Bachelor of Computer Application. The executive council of the university met on Friday and decided to give a green signal to the self-financed courses of BCA in as many as nine colleges affiliated to the university. However, the members of the Student Welfare Board went on a token fast on Friday to protest against proposed BCA course.

The nine colleges that have been granted permission to begin the self-financed BCA courses are

  • H.L. college of commerce
  • H.A. Commerce College.
  • L.J. college,
  • Navgujarat college,
  • Som Lalit institute,
  • Vardhman education trust,
  • P.D. Pandya college,
  • Sarva vidyalaya, Kadi,
  • and DDIT- Nadiad.

The university said that the admission to the undergraduate courses in computer applications will be done through centralised admission procedure. There are about 960 seats for the course and the university has assured that every student who enrolls himself for the courses will be given one computer each for study purpose.

The colleges who begin the new course are required to erect new infrastructure like new premises and computers for the computer courses as per the demands of the student leaders. The BCA course is already undertaken at the Sardar Patel University, North Gujarat University and the Saurashtra University.

The academic council of the university had proposed self-financed BCA courses a month back, but it awaited an affirmation from the executive council. Sources said there were contradictory views within the executive council itself with respect to the BCA course like the "undecided syllabus" and the "short period within which the course had to begin." There were speculations that select colleges will be given the permission to begin the courses on a self-finance basis. A member of the executive council said that the vested interests of a few members of the executive council compelled the university to take a swift decision. He was, however, uncertain about the academic consequences of the decision. He said. "A sudden decision without considering related aspects like the curriculum and total number of seats may not fulfill the academic purpose of the course.

The registrar of the Gujarat University, Mr M.P Jadia, ruled out all speculations. He said the university will form a committee comprising experts to decide the curriculum, however, the tentative syllabi for the course is ready and could be used for an interim period, which can be "brushed up" later on. The decision may give a fresh option to the students who ‘have not secured admissions to the undergraduate courses of arts and commerce after declaration of high pass percentage for the HSC general stream.

Meanwhile, the admissions to 960 seats in various self-financed BCA course colleges in nine different colleges begin on Saturday. The course will start at seven colleges in Ahmedabad, one at Kadi and one at Nadiad. Interested students may apply to the university for the courses and the seats will be allotted through a centralised admission scheme. The upper limit for the number of students for the course is 120 in each college. The colleges will have 50 percent payment seats and 50 percent merit seats. The tuition fee fixed by the university for the regular seat is Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 for the payment seat. While fees for seats in the NRI quota has been fixed at $ 3,000.
