Incessant Rains throw normal life out of gear in Ahmedabad.

Incessant rains paralysed normal life in Ahmedabad and nearby areas as rainwater inundated more than 82 localities and disrupted road traffic on Tuesday. In the afternoon, fire brigade officials were informed that a person was swept away by Sabarmati River in Juna Vadaj area but the officials could not trace him. The Kharicut Canal passing through Naroda, Odhav and Vatva areas of the city was flowing at 8.5 feet level in the afternoon as the city received more than 388mm rainfall in the last 48 hours, about l06 mm in past 24 hours, said weather office here. However, by 6 pm water level in the canal was reduced to 5.5 feet.

According to official information, water level in the canal increased due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas in the last two days. Water level at Dharoi dam was also measured at 571 feet. AMC officials have started rescue operations with the help of irrigation and fire brigade officials. Several low-lying areas turned into islands and many had to abandon their vehicles in the flooded streets. Most of the schools and educational institutions declared holiday but offices functioned normally, albeit with a skeletal staff.

Water entered the houses in almost all the low-lying areas including Gomtipur, Rakhial, Nikol village, Thakkar Bapanagar, Khodiyar Nagar, Rajendra Park, Vastral, CTM cross roads, Bage firdos, Isanpur and Ghodasar, where people had to be shifted to safer places.

Fire brigade officials said that seven complaints of electric short circuit were received during the day from Khadia Post Office, Khadia Golvad, Asha Park Society near Vasna Bus Stand and Rajpur octroi check post.

In Kalupur area a two storeyed house collapsed following heavy rains on Tuesday morning. Officials said that the incident happened in Dandi Gara ni Pol at 11 am. However, no one was injured.
