A glimpse into Indian
libraries
'Libraries
of India' - an exhibition of photographs organised by Alliance Francaise
of India gives an idea of the atmosphere in libraries. The black and white
photographs displayed here provide a glimpse into several small as well
known libraries of India.
Most of the photographs are
by Cyrille Desombre, a French photographer living in India since the last
six years.
What is beautifully captured
in the photographs is the dominant silence prevalent in libraires.
And this silence tells a
tale of the rapidly changing world around us.
There are several pictures
depicting the cold racks and walls of the library with cases upon cases
of books. Like the Connemare Library in Chennai which has the most splendid
surroundings, yet gives an appearance of being dull and static.
The other photographs are
of the David Sassoon Library in Mumbai, the Osmania Library in Hyderabad
and many others. But it is the Khuda Baksh Library of Patna which truly
reflects the essence of a library. The exhibition ends on January 23.
