Designs on the silk route
Today's
garments are more couture than pret. And hence more occasion wear. Visha
Suchde Mehta and Asif Shaikh are experimenting with embroidery with their
latest creations. With Asif’s experience at Darpan and Visha, a visiting
faculty at National Institute of Fashion Technology, the creations that
they are doing of late reek of class and a penchant for not treading on
the oft-beaten path.
Take for example, their Kangini
evening wear which is done in blue with gold. "Actually the embroidery
is silver material and gold plated," says Visha. According to the
duo, such kind of embroidery has not been explored at all. The Kangini
style was also monopolised by the kings and rulers of yesteryear.
The
duo take embroidery in ancient forms and club different techniques.’ Marodi,
the old form of embroidery done in resham finds place amongst their creations.
Asif says, "In this case the inspiration was a piece from the Calico
Museum."
Again, the Kachchi-ari is
another form of embroidery that the duo is cleverly interspersing in their
creations. Priced between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000, those interested can
have a look at the studio at 902 Anand Mangal 3 near Ambavadi Bazaar.
Or those who lead a jet-set lifestyle, can check these outfits at Ogaan
in any of the Indian cities. The duo’s creations are available there and
are reportedly been picked up by people like Jaya Bachchan the famous
Dalmadis and others.
