AMC
implements pre-monsoon plan
The
AMC has started pre-monsoon exercise in all the city zones by clearing
storm-water and drainage lines. The AMC is already struggling with disposal
of quake debris and this is likely to hinder disposal of rain and storm
water. The problem is further compounded by the fact that the entire city
has been dug up for laying the optical fibre lines.
The tunnels that were dug
for the purpose have been filled but the sand has not yet settled in.
When asked about the problem emerging from digging up done for the laying
optical fibre lines, deputy municipal commissioner of the West Zone Pinakin
Dixit said he had taken a round of the city along with his team and noticed
depressions only in the place where digging had taken place.
Mr. Z.A. Saacha, in-charge
of the Central Zone, said thorough review of the zone and check up of
choked lines has been done. Desilting has been carried out at 12 places
and care has been taken to ensure effective disposal of rainwater, he
added.
"I have decided to have
one tractor per ward to clear the debris and the garbage so that drains
are not blocked. Moreover, instructions have been given to the department
to use the sand heaps on the road for the AMC purpose even if it is privately
owned," added Mr. Saacha.
As a precautionary measure,
three unsafe constructions in the Central Zone would be demolished, Mr..Saacha
said. In the North Zone, 10 pumps have been fitted to draw out water that
overflows from the Kharicut canal.
The height of the Kharicut
canal has been raised this year to prevent crisis cropping up due to overflow
of water during monsoons. Deputy municipal commissioner of the zone Utpal
Padia said these measures are in addition to desilting exercise.
