Cross adopts 400 thalassaemic children
The Indian Red Cross Blood
Programme adopted 400 thalassaemic children on Sunday a the inauguration
of Champaben Chudgar Blood Foundation, a centre for blood donations as
well as transfusions. Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari inaugurated the centre,
which had been donated by Kiran V Chudgar in the memory of his late mother,
while Health Minister Ashok Bhatt inaugurated the blood transfusion centre
at Paldi.
Indian Red Cross also organised
a celebrity blood donor camp, where Mayor Himmatsingh Patel, Police Commissioner
P. C Pande, representative of American Red Cross and secreatrary general
of the Indian Red Cross donated blood.
During the programme itself,
the Society raised Rs 7.25 lakh from individual donors, which will go
to the 400 adopted thalassaemic children. The police commisioner also
donated Rs 10,000 and adopted two thalassaemic children, while the mayor
adopted a child.
Health Minister Ashok Bhatt
extended full support of the State Government to the Society, while the
governor lauded the achievements of the Indian Red Cross Society, Ahmedabad
Chapter.
Talking about the new centre,
President Mukesh Patel said the centre will act as the hub for collecting
blood, which will be sent to 11 public hospitals of the city. "It will
also supply blood to private hospitals and the highlight will be the thalassaemic
chilldren whom we have adopted. We will be taking complete responsibility
of these children and will support their blood transfusions throughout
the year," siad Patel.
The Society has also started
offering its donors blood replacement, said Patel. "Now all the donors
will get the amount of blood donated replaced, which is something that
has been welcomed by the donors," said Patel.
On Saturday, the Society
collected 1,000 units of blood from 12 different camps organised around
the city.
