| AMC launches plantation drive
As
a measure to check the increasing pollution level caused by vehicles,
the AMC plans to launch a plantation drive in the city. Ahmedabad Municipal
Corporation has planned to grow two lakh trees in the city this season
with active participation of residents.
Standing
committee chairman Jayantilal Parmar said the AMC has decided to grow
trees with active participation on the part of the residents. Trees will
be planted in between the road dividers and on the pavements, he said.
The AMC has launched such tree plantation programmes many times in the
past years, but no drive has been successful. "As no one takes care
of the trees, the drive fails. Responsible citizens should come forward
and take care of the trees," Mr Parmar said.
The
AMC also has plans to grow trees in its empty plots with the help of environmental
organisations. Organisations working for environment will be invited by
the AMC and entrusted to look after growing of trees in a piece of land.
The AMC has also decided to buy 15,000 tree guards. Cultural committee
chairman Jawahar Bhatia said the aim of tree plantation is to check the
level of pollution in the city. The resolution was passed in the standing
committee of the AMC. The standing committee has also passed the proposal
to buy 20 submersible pumps to clear water logging at the cost of Rs 18
lakhs.
