| Bifurcation of city police stations to affix responsibility
The state government
is considering a proposal to bifurcate police stations in Ahmedabad city
into two, clearly demarcating the jurisdiction and areas in an effort
to monitor each area.
Minister
of state for home Amit Shah said here on Monday that the proposal is a
departure from the present system to have two police inspectors in each
police station in the city and instead affix responsibility for each area
to one police inspector.
The
city presently has 30 police stations apart from one women’s police
station and the city crime branch. Each police station has two police
inspectors except the Sola police station and the women’s police
station that has one police inspector each.
"The
present system of two police inspectors for each police station created
confusion in affixing responsibility for crimes committed in areas under
their purview. It has therefore been decided to demarcate it into two
police stations giving equal responsibility to each official," Mr
Shah said.
However,
he admitted that the two police inspectors concept had been adopted, considering
the fact that one inspector was constantly engaged in visiting the courts,
leaving the police station without a person in-charge. He said, with the
demarcation of areas and duties the task of controlling crime within the
area will be simplified relatively and will be done on the basis of population
and geographical area.
He
said the home department will either give new names to the police stations
or may just divide it into section I and II.
The
state government is considering proposal to double the number of police
stations in Ahmedabad city by demarcating area under each police station.
Meanwhile,
Mr Shah said the home department has already promoted 60 police inspectors
to the rank of DySP whereas the process of promoting 60 PSIs to the rank
of PIs is in the pipeline.
